Do You Frame Your Goals With Negativity?

A few days ago I delivered a growth mindset parenting workshop and noticed a common theme.

When parents reflected on their mindsets, they expressed their new goals as negative statements like,

  • “I want to stop being impatient”
  • “I want to eliminate my criticism”
  • “I want to work on my pessimism”

So today, I want to offer a different way to frame our goals.

When we decide to change things for the better, and start to explore our mindsets, we identify specific areas we want to change.

Sometimes it’s more intuitive to state what we don’t want or what we want to leave behind. However, these types of statements don’t clarify what we do want.

As we close the series on clarity this month, I invite you to revisit the way you frame your parenting goals and reflect on the following:

  • Why do you want to change? Think about specific values you care about and why you want to align with them. For example, integrity, respect, freedom, perseverance, curiosity, and so on. When we are clear about why we care, it motivates us to put in the effort and learn from our mistakes and failures, which are part of the journey.
  • Frame your goal with the quality you want to grow. For example, I want to communicate with more peace, kindness, or what feels true for you (instead of framing your goal as I want to stop being impatient). The reason is – impatience will keep showing up, and it’s expected. We are not after avoiding it. We are after creating a new pathway for the quality we want to develop.

The magic of the parenting journey is its ever-changing and ever-evolving nature. It inspires us to grow with our kids.

When you know why you are challenged to learn, it puts you on a quest to find your greatest treasures, your inner gifts.

Let the magic continue with clarity.
